When you enter Demínka restaurant, you will see that tradition does not have to be an empty concept. For us, Demínka’s tradition is everything, and we are proud to be able to carry on the legacy of many previous generations of restaurateurs and café owners.
Demínka was founded as early as 1886 and is one of Prague’s longest-running establishments. To this day, its unique, airy interior with high ceilings has been preserved; the Art Nouveau stucco work you see on them is protected as a heritage feature. From the preserved décor of today’s lounge, you can also see that this space once served as a chess, billiards, and card room.
If Demínka’s walls could speak, they would tell thousands of stories. For example, that the founding documents of Sparta Prague were signed at Demínka in the 19th century. Or how, at the beginning of the 20th century, anarchists met here and, right at the tables where you are now sitting, created the magazine Šibeničky. And of course, the names of famous regulars who used to come to Demínka would have to be mentioned.
Reading through the list of distinguished regulars of our restaurant is like leafing through a dictionary of the most renowned figures of Czech art. Demínka was regularly visited by Jaroslav Hašek, Fráňa Šrámek, Stanislav Kostka Neumann, Jiří Mahen, František Gellner, and Rudolf Těsnohlídek. After the First World War, regular guests included Karel and Josef Čapek, František Langer, and actors from the nearby Vinohrady Theatre. And in the dark years of communism, Demínka became a refuge for banned artists, such as the famous Charter 77 signatories Vlasta Chramostová and Stanislav Milota. You can still meet a number of celebrities among Demínka’s guests today.
At Demínka, we place great emphasis on quality beer and food. We are proud to have become part of the select group of Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurants, the best establishments where Pilsner beer is poured and top-class Czech cuisine is served. We are convinced that whatever you choose from our menu, you will be delighted. We know well that we can ensure the highest quality of food and drinks for you only by using first-class ingredients and working with them honestly and carefully. Today, tradition and history at Demínka are combined with the most modern technology for pouring tank beer and a modern approach to gastronomy. Our bartenders undergo regular professional training and successfully take part in professional competitions in the art of pouring beer (for example Master Bartender, Pinkasova noční můra, and others).
To broaden the range of culinary experiences even further, in recent years we have started organising various gastronomic events. These include Bavarian Weeks, St Martin’s feasts, and game feasts; in 2015 we celebrated Masopust for the first time as well. During these events, you can taste dishes that are otherwise unavailable and a special selection of beers and wines. If you would like to hold a private or corporate celebration at Demínka, nothing stands in your way. The restaurant’s capacity is 130 guests, with space for an additional 50 guests in the lounge; of course, we will provide refreshments from our side according to your wishes. We also offer catering services. We are able to provide, at the highest level, buffets, banquets, cocktail receptions, or garden parties for up to 2000 guests.
Visit Demínka and become part of its famous history. We look forward to welcoming you.
